THE SUIT
30 October – 16 November
The Sello Maake kaNcube Foundation in association with Daphne Kuhn of Theatre on the Square, is proud to announce a thrilling new production of Can Themba’s’ iconic story, THE SUIT from 29th October – 16th November 2024.
It has recently returned from a successful run at NAF celebrating 30 years since it was last performed there. It was then a memorable show performed by candle light and gas lamps with Barney Simon lighting the actors faces with a torch!
The story was adapted by Mothobi Mutloatse, Barney Simon and Can Themba and presented at the Market Theatre with Barney Simon as director and subsequently staged internationally. The Suit will run, 30 years later, at Theatre on the Square, Sandton and open on Wednesday, 30 October. The lead role was played by acclaimed actor, Sello Maake KaNcube who will be reprising the role with a stellar cast including Tshireletso Nkoane, Job Kubatsi and Lebohang Motaung. The director will be award-winning J.Bobs Tshabalala.
Written by banned investigative journalist and author, Can Themba, in the 60’s, THE SUIT is set in Sophiatown against the backdrop of the Apartheid regime’s forced removals under the group Areas Act. It tells the story of Philemon who discovers that his wife, Matilda has a lover. When the lover flees after being discovered, he leaves behind his suit. Philemon devises a cruel punishment by forcing Matilda to treat the suit as a guest who must accompany them through every moment of the day.
The story is a powerful metaphor for the impact of oppression on personal relationships , while it explores love and betrayal, unforgiveness, revenge and destructive intolerance.
