Theatre on the Square Unveils a Stellar 2025 Lineup of Dynamic Productions
After an exciting bumper year of successful productions and concerts, Theatre on the Square is excited to announce its 2025 line up of productions to look forward to for all theatre patrons.
Featuring thought-provoking dramas, high-energy dance theatre, comedy, beloved classics, children’s theatre and fresh adaptations, the diverse programme promises to captivate audiences of all ages.
The year will commence with a new series of Candlelight Concerts and an improvisation evening and sketch comedy in January.
Plus our wonderful weekly lunch hour classical concert will commence from the 24th of January.
We welcome back THE SUIT for a return season by popular demand in February.
We also proudly announce the exciting premier of the International children’s musical theatre production Diary of a Wimpy Kid – The Musical with an all South African young cast.

22 January – 1 February: Musical Chairs
Musical Chairs is the brainchild of The Locksmiths Collective: a multi-disciplinary theatre making duo made up of Sipho Didiza and Genesis Shirindza, collaborating with the HERA duo, Aurelie Stratton and Megan Carelse.
This revolutionary physical theatre production reimagines the childhood game as a lens to explore society’s interaction with social media. With a cast of eight versatile artists, Musical Chairs blends traditional theatre, dance, and physical storytelling to highlight power dynamics, trends, and digital-age love. 3 – 16 February: The Suit
Returning by popular demand, after a sold out season, this South African classic by Can Themba explores themes of love, betrayal, and resilience during apartheid. Directed by J. Bobs Tshabalala and produced by the Sello Maake KaNcube Foundation and Daphne Kuhn, this adaptation continues to enchant audiences. Starring Sello Maake KaNcube, Tshireletso Nkoane, Job Kubatsi and Lebohang Motaung.
17 February – 2 March: The Pillowman
Martin McDonagh’s internationally acclaimed masterpiece, directed by Ildi Kungl, is a suspenseful exploration of truth and storytelling. This production features a pre- and post-show art exhibition of local visual artists whose works enrich the narrative.
3 – 8 March: Molly Street
Written and directed by Peter Churu, this one-woman play, starring Chidochangu Jo Anne Tenga, tells the gripping tale of a crime of passion in 1960s Zimbabwe. It delves into themes of early child marriages, women’s rights, and societal norms, blending the supernatural with historical commentary.
10 – 16 March: Joburg Film Fest
The Joburg Film Festival returns with a curated showcase of African and international films, providing opportunities for filmmakers and audiences to engage, network, and celebrate the art of cinema.
18 – 29 March: A Doll’s Life
This hilarious and unfiltered one-woman show, written and performed by Micaela Jade Tucker, explores the highs and lows of a quarter-life crisis with wit and charm. Directed by Lara Toselli, A Doll’s Life offers a refreshingly candid look at life’s unexpected turns.
31 March – 4 May: Diary of a Wimpy Kid
The international musical sensation debuts in South Africa! Based on Jeff Kinney’s bestselling children’s book series, this family-friendly production, co-produced by Daphne Kuhn and Vicky Friedman, brings Greg Heffley’s adventures to life with a talented, large South African cast. Educational, entertaining, and heartwarming, Diary of a Wimpy Kid
is perfect for all ages.
